A Message from Danny Fuqua

As we approach this year’s Juneteenth Celebration here in Volusia County, we are reminded of the hard-fought journey toward freedom and justice for African Americans in this nation. Juneteenth is not just a day of remembrance — it is a call for us to reflect on our progress and recommit ourselves to protecting the freedoms so many before us fought to achieve.

At a time when we are witnessing unrest across the country — from the protests now unfolding in Los Angeles, to peaceful demonstrations calling for fairness and accountability — we must remember that we cannot afford to relive the darkest parts of our past. Freedom is fragile, and democracy requires constant vigilance. We must rise above the negativity and division that threatens to pull us backwards.

In the coming days, many eyes will turn to the celebration of the President’s birthday, with talk of parades and spectacle. While some may seek to shift attention toward personal glorification, we must remain focused on the values that truly matter — unity, justice, freedom, and equality for all.

At the same time, we also recognize the upcoming observance of the United States Army’s birthday — a reminder of the sacrifices made by our military men and women to secure the very freedoms we cherish. Let us honor their service by standing strong for democracy here at home.

As we celebrate Juneteenth — and as these other national events unfold — let us keep our heads high and our purpose clear:

• We will not give in to division.

• We will continue to uplift one another.

• We will work together to promote civic engagement and community participation.

• We will teach the next generation that we are better than hate.

Let’s go out and support our local Juneteenth celebrations throughout Volusia County — this is a time to come together, honor our history, and strengthen our communities.
