The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (H.R. 22/S. 128), was passed by the House of Representatives on April 10, 2025.
The bill requires documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, for voter registration in federal elections. It eliminates online and mail-in registration systems and mandates frequent audits of voter rolls, potentially leading to voter purges. Election officials could face criminal penalties for processing registrations without proper documentation.
ACLU Condemns House Passage of Anti-Voter SAVE Act, Calls on Senate to Reject It
Critics warn the SAVE Act could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, especially low-income individuals, seniors, and young first-time voters who lack access to required documents. It also imposes significant administrative burdens on election offices without providing funding. While proponents argue it ensures election security, evidence suggests non-citizen voting is exceedingly rare.
Additionally, the Act promotes frequent voter roll purges based on potentially faulty data, risking the removal of eligible voter. The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
We urge everyone to call ALL Democratic and Independent Senators and urge them to vote NO on the SAVE Act and block this from passing.
